JAPAN - Local elections: the Democratic government weakened

One month after the great earthquake that struck the archipelago, the results of local elections that took place on April 9 proved painful for the government of Naoto Kan. Its management of disaster and the nuclear crisis has been criticized by public opinion. Shintaro Ishihara, backed by the Liberal Democratic Party (main opposition) and known for his nationalist views, was reelected governor of Tokyo for a fourth term.

The election campaign had made discreet out of respect for the victims.
