At least 22 Egyptians were killed Friday when a bus fell into the river Nile near the village of Naser, in the province of Beni Suef, 110 km south of Cairo. According to sources in the security services, the bus, carrying 32 passengers, slid into the Nile from a vehicle platform for a ferry ride to Ashmen height, a district of Nasr.
The sources said only four people were saved when the vehicle got out into the river. The waters of the Nile are the usual scenario ferry wrecks and accidents due to overloading of passengers and goods, the poor conditions found in the vessels and the lack of security measures. The state news agency MENA initially put the number of dead at 43 people, but later lowered the number to 22.
