Barcelona (Editorial) .- Rikers Island is one of the largest prisons in the United States. Located between the Bronx and Queens, close to New York's La Guardia Airport, in its interior some 14,000 prisoners each day in a room with a capacity of 21,000. Of the famous people who have stayed-even for a time-between the bars of Rikers Island is Mark David Chapman, the murderer of John Lennon, the rapper Tupac Shakur, who entered by a sex scandal; Guy Valella, Republican Senator New York, the famous musician Sonny Rollins, or, recently, another rapper, Lil Wayne.

Lethal injection was used in Rikers Island in New York when it applied the death penalty, abolished in the middle of the last decade. During the Civil War, this island in the East River was used as a military base until 1930 was sold to the state of New York, which became a prison. One of the characteristics that marked the history of this prison was the segregation of prisoners LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender), a move that ended in 2005 after 30 years in operation.

In New York, one of the most precious assets that come from this prison is their carrot cake, whose recipe was a secret until a few years ago.
