COSTA RICA - A former president convicted of corruption

Miguel Angel Rodriguez was sentenced April 27 to five years in prison for receiving bribes, kickbacks from Alcatel. Rodriguez, who led the country between 1998 and 2002, was found guilty of having received 500,000 dollars over the 14 million paid by the French company to Costa Rican officials. He protested his innocence throughout the trial and said he would appeal his conviction.

Several former officials of the Costa Rican Electricity Institute were also convicted.
