Merkel's CDU suffers setback in regional elections in Bremen

Berlin. .- The regional elections of the federal state of Bremen (northern Germany) today strengthened the positions of Social Democrats and Greens, which is expected to renew their coalition in the 'Land', and dealt another blow to the ranks of Chancellor Angela Merkel, especially partners, the Liberals.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD), the dominant force in the federal state since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), not only defended his position of first force but also rose to 38%, compared to 36.7% in 2007 -, according to projections by ZDF public television at the end of the premises.

Greens surged to 23%, compared to 16.5% in the previous regional-and snatched second place and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Merkel, who declined to 21.5%, compared to 25.6% before -. The big loser was the Liberal Party (FDP), which was downgraded to extra-parliamentary force to be 3%, half that in 2007 - one week after renewing its federal leadership in an attempt to regain positions on the fall in chopped suffered since becoming a member of Merkel.

The Left, however, managed to defend its strong position in the chamber, according to these projections, to be at 5.5%. The regional Bremen were the first in the country's history that citizens were summoned from the 16 years rather than the usual 18 - and, according to ZDF, the preferences of that band went to the Greens, which to maintain the hot streak that has undergone in recent polls, could be the biggest beneficiary in a general.

Outside the alleged effects in the medium to long term, the election of Bremen, the smallest of the 16 'Länder', gave a new twist as a warning to the coalition of Merkel in Berlin, who can not trace positions. The image is outside the chancellor as a strong leader does not correspond to the persistent phase of internal weakness, reflected in a series of regional elections this year and compounded by the plight of its liberal members, fighting for his survival as a parliamentary force.

Bremen elections were the fifth marathon of the 2011 German election, over which renewed the parliaments of seven of the 16 federal states. The biggest drubbing it took a coalition of Chancellor last March when it lost power in Baden-Württemberg, the 'Land' most prosperous in Germany, and have to see how that was his fiefdom became the first state Land the country ruled by a prime minister green, Winfried Kretschmann.

This was by far the most serious blow to the ranks of the election year that already had a bad start for the CDU to have to give Hamburg the SPD, which also won an absolute majority. Still weakest liberal FDP, whose presidency was dethroned a week ago the Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle, which is responsible for the fall training, election after election.

The Liberals were now out of other regional chamber, which can not be attributed to the new leader, Finance Minister Philipp Rösler, since that just came to office. In the coming months must, however, be able to rescue his training, which polls today are converted into the following extra-general, planned for 2013.

After the five regional opens a break until September, when elections will be held in Mecklenburg Vorpommern (East), Merkel's constituency, and the city-state of Berlin, ruled by a coalition between the SPD and the Left.
