FRANCE - No, Strauss-Kahn is not the victim!

The presumption of innocence is a fundamental principle in court, provided that it serves precisely to let justice take action, submit evidence, hear witnesses. When he brandished in juxtaposing words like "incredible", "stunt", "conspiracy" is already beyond the description of the facts. When, moreover, faced a charge of sexual assault, it evokes the temperament "libertine", "seductive", "hot rabbit" of the accused, it is as if the decision had already passed.

And the victim crossed when camp liars or Sensitive. All these words have been underway since the arrest on Saturday [14 May], the popular - and presidential - IMF boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn. They bring to justice long journey that women victims of sexual assault or sexual harassment at work have been through to be recognized before their credibility.

They replied that they had so long had invented, exaggerated, caused, or had a score to settle with whatever they need to accuse any courage or concrete proof, so that they go to trial. This is a victory of feminism only recently that in some places, including North America, we now take their complaints seriously.

But this achievement is still fragile, as do many see the comments on the DSK case. The alleged victim is ignored or minimized the role of pawn in a political conspiracy - theory not impossible, but certainly extraordinary. By cons, it should be excluded from the analysis of the personality of the suspect, "insisting seducer", as is a convenient euphemism in which rumors and facts are the sexual escapades of all sorts, sometimes with the consent of the ladies, sometimes without.

Whether one calls for caution, either. But it is also necessary that this applies to both sides. Here, at least to practice willful blindness, it is clear that appearances and descriptions of events are yet against Mr. Strauss-Kahn. The indictment, alleging serious acts, and the real possibility that man can leave the United States justifies the judicial rigor exercised against him.

This in no way indicative of what happens next. False accusations exist. However, being nailed to the pillory is still a risk that many abused women face, especially if the man in question is rich, powerful and surrounded. Sexism and social classes are often a hellish couple in these stories.

The anonymous cleaning lady at the Sofitel, a resident of the Bronx, now has to live in hiding because suddenly his career is mixed with that of DSK and its perceived dark designs. It is unfair to her. And it will be until justice has not decided otherwise.
