Denmark will demand that the North Pole is recognized as belonging to Danish sovereignty, announces daily Information, which had access to a confidential government document. According to Copenhagen, the pole is located at the continental shelf - so in an area where sovereignty is exercised - and in the influence area of Denmark as it includes the Faroe Islands and Greenland, the pole is close the latter island.
On several occasions, Danish ministers have hinted that they intend to seek such recognition of sovereignty, but it's the first time that the kingdom is thus formally state its views on the region. According to information, this option creates a risk of controversy with Russia and other countries with the same claim.
To date, no studies indicate that there is oil or gas prospecting in the bottom of the sea in this area, and the document published by Information does not specify what "own" the North Pole is so important.
