IMF appoints managing director John Lipsky functions

Washington. .- The IMF announced on Sunday the appointment of John Lipsky as the new acting director of the institution, in the absence of Dominique Strauss-Khan, currently detained in New York on charges of sexual assault. As explained by the IMF spokesman Bill Murray, "according to standard procedures in the Fund, Lipsky acts as the managing director when the holder is not in Washington, the headquarters of the multilateral institution.

The IMF board, said Murray, is scheduled to hold later in the day an informal session to receive information about events surrounding Strauss-Kahn. For now, the spokesman said, "number three" of the IMF, Nemat Shafik, tomorrow will replace Strauss-Kahn at the meeting of finance ministers from the euro area in Brussels.

Shafik is the deputy managing director who oversees the work of the IMF in a number of European countries. Strauss-Kahn, seen until now most likely presidential candidate in elections in France next year, was arrested on Saturday aboard an aircraft of the airline Air France in the New York airport John F.

Kennedy when he was about to fly to Paris. The senior has been charged with attempted rape, criminal sexual act and unlawful restraint in the sexual assault case against a waitress at the hotel where he was staying in downtown New York.
