Obama meets with Republicans emergency to save budget

Washington .- U.S. President. UU., Barack Obama, will meet on Thursday to urge the congressional leaders to try to reach a budget agreement that will avoid the Government's administrative suspension from Friday. As announced by the White House, Obama has called the president of the House of Representatives, John Boehner, and the leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate, Harry Reid, in an Oval Office meeting at 13.00 local (17.00 GMT) .

It will be the third meeting between the three personalities to try to reach a budget deal which ensures that funds the operation of the Administration, which would otherwise be starting tomorrow with no money allocated for many of its operations and will be forced to close many of their offices.

Congress has not yet approved a budget for the current fiscal year, of which only six months, and so far the federal government has seen its costs covered by specific extensions of the previous fiscal year's budget. Republicans have proposed a further extension of two weeks, subject to additional budget cuts of 12,000 million dollars (nearly 8,400 million euros), something that Democrats and the White House rejected.

Faced with the prospect that failure to reach an agreement, the Government has already started preparations for the possible cessation of the administration, which would affect about 800,000 federal employees. Democrats have proposed cuts of 33,000 million dollars (over 23,000 million euros), but Republicans are demanding more, to cope with the country's budget deficit, which will run this fiscal year's $ 1.5 trillion (1.05 trillion euros).
