Hungary: Parliament approves new constitution

The Hungarian Parliament voted on Monday for a new constitution. The draft of the national conservative government coalition of the Civic Alliance (Fidesz) of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Christian-Democratic People's Party (KDNP) voted to 262 MPs, five more than the required two-thirds majority, which the government parties Citizens Alliance (Fidesz) and the Christian-Democratic People's Party (KDNP ) have the basic law was approved.

44 Members of the extreme right party Jobbik voted against and one parliamentarian abstaining. The Socialists (MSZP) and the green-inspired parliamentary newcomer "policy can be different" (LMP) did not participate in the debate and the vote. Their seats in parliament remained empty. The opposition criticized, among other things the fact that the new constitution no referendum has been subjected.

Which were contrary to the government that almost one million citizens in the so-called national consultation - the sending of questionnaires to the basic provisions of the new Constitution to all households - were involved in their design. Following the signing by President Schmitt on Easter Monday the new constitution takes effect on 1 January 2012.

The draft constitution had been criticized from abroad. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had said in Budapest just before the vote, there was international concern about the Constitution. The government should seek within Hungary and from € Europe and the United Nations recommendations.
