Three people were killed Saturday in clashes erupted between protesters and police in downtown Tunis. This was announced by the Interior Ministry in a statement. The police launched tear gas and fired several warning shots as protesters hurled stones. Servants of the anti-riot units and others in civilian clothes, most hoods, tried to repel the demonstrators.
The police made several arrests and called for reinforcements. The protesters ripped billboards and benches for groped to block the move to police vans. Eyewitnesses speak also of civilians armed with sticks and masked, intent to seek demonstrators in the streets of the capital of Tunisia.
The protesters also looted and damaged shops and supermarkets. The protests on Friday which saw the participation of over 100 000 people have been severely condemned by the Interior Ministry in a statement also reports of 51 injured, including 21 police officers and three police stations in part given to burned and looted.
Referring again to the young protesters who demanded the resignation of interim Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi, the ministry then launched an appeal to their parents to "discourage their children from participating in such events, encouraging them to return to class and do everything to avoid serving as human shields for the agitators.
