Saif al Islam al Gaddafi: Difficult family circumstances

Without notes: Saif Gaddafi suddenly appeared Saif al Islam al Gaddafi again. The son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who last struck by his silence, turned in the night to Monday on state television to his countrymen. The dictator's son is often heralded as a reformer. His appearance recalled the lengthy speeches of his father's flickering.

Saif al Islam told the same beginning, he would be in dialect rather than classical Arabic - talk to the Libyans - just as a Libyan. He had prepared no speech manuscript. Casually leaning back in front of a green-white-colored world map, Saif instructed the Libyan people of the options.

But he could not hide his nervousness. Sometimes the usually eloquent cosmopolitan in a gray suit looked desperate. It was a rambling, often incoherent speech, but had a central message. Now there is only one alternative for the country: one end of the uprising and reform, or a bloody civil war that split the country and will lead to dire poverty.

"We are at a crossroads," confirmed Saif and compared the alleged threat of dividing the country into East and West between North and South Korea. He spoke of gangs who were armed with weapons and danger on the roads, made by people around flying high on drugs with tanks, foreign agents and foreign media who wanted to weaken the country by Islamists, the independent emirates had proclaimed, by imperialist Americans, who would then show up quickly on aircraft carriers off the Libyan coast, from Auslandslibyern, in waiting in the safe Europe or Canada, would have wiped out up to the people in Libya against each other, only to take power.

Bread will be invaluable when it came to chaos, "said Saif Gaddafi. And who should then distribute the oil wealth? He ended the speech with an open threat: The military would to the last man to fight to the last woman to the last round. Less clear were the promises of reform. "A new Libya" should be created, "said the son of the heads of state.

But most of what was actually announced, knows the population. A new constitution, from Saif al Islam is said, made them for years in view. Also on the strengthening of local institutions have long been talking about. The same applies to the promised discussion of the General People's Congress over an opening.

But the aim has been always what "contemporary leaders" sought - and those were not things like press or freedom of assembly. The seat of the Congress will now be under the control of Gaddafi's opponents. So the TV game from Sunday night confirmed the suspicion that the regime is struggling against a comprehensive loss of control.

Saif al Islam, at least indirectly acknowledged some success stories of the opponents of the regime. Was that the lackluster performance by the father of trimmed and still offended reform politician? Or the father had sent him out of sheer desperation because his other sons had not been able to stop the protests with brute force of arms? Saif al Islam al Gaddafi came prepared so bad the studio, because his performance was the subject of a power struggle within the leadership, the outcome was uncertain long? Against the wishes of his father, Saif al Islam had hardly allowed to appear on television, Isabelle Werenfels says of the Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin.

If Muammar Gaddafi have a favorite son, he makes it but no one easy to identify them. "At any of the prominent sons he had a permanent untroubled relationship," says Isabelle Werenfels. Gaddafi had "institutionalized chaos" the main guiding principle. Finally, it had looked as if the revolutionary leader relies on the hard-line military faction in the family.

At about Saif's brother who was born in 1975 Mutasim, who has made career in the security apparatus and has been promoted to the national security adviser. That he commanded his own militia, his father had once between periods so worried that Mutasim had to flee to Egypt for some time. Vested, he is known primarily as a private citizen, he is like other brothers in that part of the jet-set universe at home, where there is a lot of light and shadow.

Finally, a drinking bout had attracted to Sylvester on the Caribbean island of St. Bart's attention. Similarly, there seems to be predisposed to the 1973-born son Saadi, who is married to the daughter of a military commander. As a professional soccer player in Italy, he sat with clubs from Perugia, Genoa, Udine, mostly on the bench.

Since 2006 he is to preside over the Libyan special forces. In Benghazi, he is to command the operation against the demonstrators. Also, the 1980-born son of Gaddafi Khamis is a military man. He commanded the brigade-Khamis, which allegedly attacked in recent days in Benghazi, a funeral procession.

The 1977-born son Hannibal finally is at the center of the grotesque campaign waged by the Gaddafi Klan in the past year against Switzerland. The revolutionary leader even called for a jihad against the country. Finally, the authorities there Hannibal and his wife had settled temporarily, because they are supposed to have abused domestic workers, they were released on bail.

Hannibal had previously mainly by drawing attention to himself in which he beat up his pregnant girlfriend in a Paris hotel, drunken attack on the opposite lane on the Champs Elysées was racing or Italian police with a fire extinguisher. He is a graduate of the Libyan military academy. Less obvious than these brothers are the sons and daughter, Aisha Mohammed (from the first marriage of the dictator with an officer's daughter) and Saif al Arab, which is at least in the Munich police and the local scene doorman knew.

In light of this relationship was Saif al Islam as a democratic hopes of the family, was more interested in art as for the half-world. His closeness to the deceased Austrian right-wing populist Joerg Haider caused a stir while, but Saif Gaddafi was especially appreciated in the West for his political commitment.

He had to last the now rebellious tribes in the east of the country and the Islamists the hand stretched out to dialogue. Meanwhile, it looked like this at all, as if the revolutionary leader to build it to his successor. The Western-oriented technocrats in his wake, as the head of the national oil company, Shukri Ghanem al, should have got at that time.

had attacked the old guard, which Saif repeatedly violent, which should, however, nor have tasted like some of his brothers. In December last year, saw Saif al Islam forced even the unusual step of publicly counter the impression that there was disagreement within the family. His political retreat in recent months, the father of the contrary - including the fact that his media group with arrests and the closure of its main newspaper had to fight.

Overall, Muammar al Gaddafi has to key posts in the security agencies and other important positions increasingly rely on people from his tribe, the Qadafa or to members of friendly tribes. The stronger it should have taken that tribal leaders threw Alla have now renounced allegiance to him.

"Gaddafi is no longer our brother. We call on him to leave our country, "said one of them. The Warf Alla were an important pillar of Gaddafi's power. Many of his relatives and want to exercise in the security apparatus.
