The Hungarian president signs new constitution

The Hungarian President Pal Schmitt, signed Monday the controversial new constitution Magyar, after being passed by Parliament last week and will enter into force on the first day of 2012 despite the strong criticisms leveled within and outside the country . With the adoption of the new Constitution, which is "Hungarian national, modern and European," the year 2011 "will be important for the entire nation," said the head of state after his signature on the document in the Sándor Palace Budapest, the presidential headquarters.

The new constitution was approved by deputies of the ruling conservative Fidesz, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who after sweep in elections last year now have two-thirds of parliamentary seats. The main criticism against the new constitution is drafted by one party, Fidesz, and limits the powers of the Constitutional Court.

Also modifies the process of adoption of many laws, establishing a requirement for the need to be approved two-thirds vote of Parliament. It has also been harshly criticized by some members of the European Union, whose rotating presidency precisely Hungary holds this semester. Hungary is the only country of the former orbit of the defunct Soviet Union after the fall of the Iron Curtain had not drafted a new constitution, but had substantially changed the current.
