At least 12 people were killed and 80 others missing after a boat wreck that occurred on Sunday on Lake Kivu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, said Monday the provincial authorities. According to some sources, a dozen bodies have been rescued after the sinking of the boat, overloaded with goods transported from the town of Kasunyu in the territory of Kalehe, bound to Bukavu in South Kivu province.

According to witnesses, the weather accompanied by high winds and waves rise to the accident. Passengers thrown into the water some of the objects they brought with them to reduce the weight of the boat, but it was not possible to avoid the drama, say some passengers managed to save their lives.

For now, eleven people have been rescued by boats that were in the area at the time of the wreck. The provincial government has initiated an investigation to analyze the circumstances of the wreck and determine the exact number of passengers who traveled aboard the boat. Some rescue teams together with officials of humanitarian organizations have moved on Monday to the area where the accident occurred in the search for other possible survivors.
