AI believes that Syrians have killed 393

At least 393 people have died at the hands of security forces since the protests began in favor of democracy in Syria for five weeks, according to estimates by Amnesty International (AI), which has also ensured that at least 23 people died Monday during the army's attack against the city of Deraa, in the south, and warned that the figure "could be much higher." In a statement, the organization has denounced the "brutal Syrian government's reaction to the changing demands of its people" and has ensured that the army tanks on Monday bombed civilian buildings and residential areas after deployed in Deraa.

Besides, according to AI, the city lacks electricity and water. Deraa, which has become the main focus of the protests in Syria, has been the city where the first deaths were recorded of demonstrators by security forces since the protests began in mid-March. Amnesty estimates at least 393 people have been killed by security forces since the protests began.

Amnesty International has received the names of 23 people reportedly have died in the military attack Deraa. "However, the total number of deaths may be much greater," he said. "Many of the dead men lost their lives because of artillery and, according to Amnesty International sources," reported the deployment of snipers have attacked Government who tried to assist the wounded lying on the streets.

" "Some corpses were left lying in the streets near the Omari mosque and elsewhere, and has prevented people pick them up," he added. Besides, according to AI, the Army has apparently also used heavy weapons in the Al Muadamiya in Damascus, and the media have reported the deaths of demonstrators in Douma, also in the capital.

"With the use of artillery against their own people, the Syrian government has shown its willingness Monday to repress peaceful protests at any price, even at the expense of the lives of the Syrians," said the director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, Malcolm Smart.

Security forces have arrested some 500 pro-democracy supporters across Syria after the government sent tanks to try to crush the protests in the city of Dera, said Tuesday the Syrian human rights organization Sawasiah.
