Cuba frees Oscar Elias Biscet and nine other political prisoners

The Cuban Catholic Church on Thursday announced the upcoming release of opposition Oscar Elias Biscet, belonging to the group of the Group of 75 and a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International. Biscet, who was serving a sentence of 25 years for acts against the independence and territorial integrity of the state, is one of the jailed opposition has rejected the condition of exile to his release from prison.

Five of the nine inmates listed in the lists of political prisoners from the opposition Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation (CCDHRN) with sentences from 2 to 25 years in prison. Among the crimes for which they were punished include piracy, terrorism, defiance of authority, illegal possession of weapons, illegal departure from the island, theft, escape disobedience and public disorder.

René González Love is in prison since 2005 and was sentenced to 8 years on charges of contempt and destruction, while Juan Luis Rodríguez Desdín was jailed in 2009 and sentenced to two years in prison.

In the case of Luis Jogee Adam Osvel Valle, Armando Roca and Alcántara Randol no data available on the timing, reasons for incarceration and conviction. So far, 94 Cuban prisoners have agreed to go to Spain to leave the prison in Cuba, of which 40 are of the Group of 75. Eight other dissidents of the Group of 75 who refuse to exile have been released in recent months and remain in Cuba.

Cuba's government pledged last year to release all prisoners of the Group of 75 who remained in prison (52 at the time), after an unprecedented dialogue with the Catholic Church was supported by the Government of Spain. The Cuban authorities extended their offer to release other prisoners convicted of offenses against state security, although many of them internal opposition not recognize them as active dissidents.
