Alexandria, the day after

"Better than a thousand soccer world cup, better than fasting in Aid, best of all. This is not a victory, it is much better: is change." Tomorrow? "We're in the morning. Since we are building" said a young Egyptian. "No to 80 million Egyptians," says another on the day after the day on which anything is possible.

Something wonderful happened, almost magical: the people have won the battle, his strength has expired. A unique moment to savor the beauty of what happened, what is happening. Surely many colleagues who like myself, have spent years working to understand that separates us, problems, values, what happens to us in the Mediterranean, now we are surprised and disrupted many of our preconceptions.

And today we received a lecture: no substitute for people. Hesitant ideologies, atavistic fears, alarms civilizing about Islam, the Arab world ... Nothing beats the universal value of trying to achieve something together, all, something as simple as aspire to a better life for ourselves and our children.

Nothing less, simple, right? What bandages therefore prevent us from understanding and taking it and the first step in all our assessments? Is to think ... Perhaps this should devote some time now. Alexandria in the scene have been difficult days, with many insecurities and feelings facing a string of feelings and decisions for which there posted, we were.

In Alexandria, a small community of Spanish people who worked on the fundamental, solidarity. The confusion of the early days, the solid base of professionals in their Consulate, as Instituto Cervantes, we have maintained since the first day until now, at the foot of the canyon. Friendship networks that have allowed us to experience the insecurities of the first sleepless night, neighbors keeping our houses with clubs and guns.

Police had disappeared. Such was our surprise at first that we confuse the first demonstration with the noise of the washer. At the end of the carpet cleaning shots alerted us that there were. Such is the situation in a state of emergency, no Internet, no phone during the early days, and the alert in our families, small to those who wanted to see grow tolerant eye, while watching demonstrations and tanks for all streets.

Above all, our Egyptian friends. The calls of farewell, appalling as some of us move to take our families. A feeling of helplessness in such times of uncertainty is maddening. And it all boils in Alexandria Cairo so far, only present in the early days Aljazira showed a vitality from the very beginning.

Spanish correspondents called us, "How can we come?" She asked. Trains and roads were cut, and this city was not without its critical moments, many houses were burned police, there was much violence on the first Friday of demonstration, deployment of tanks, burning the seat of civil government, etc..

Do not forget that Alexandria had been a serious attack on a Coptic church this Christmas and survived the stress of a young man's brutal death at the hands of Khaled Jaid Police in June 2010, completed during the last months. It was precisely this movement which starred many of the mobilization, all messages pending call their early days.

In Alexandria, the great chaotic second largest city of Egypt, there were moments of significant personal memories: people helping police the first day lynching. A city ordered the second day. I do not think any Olympic city has better volunteer service self-organizing traffic, defending the library, helping ...

Exemplary night patrols across the broad sense of the word human. "Could you oonerse the belt?" I looked stunned by the window of a taxi that never ever had this advanced technology, and thanked both the third day, first stepped on the street with my children, that this young man addressed me as surreal as something normal.

Today young people are organizing and cleaning the streets of the city. Poster sessions are being displayed. The Alexandrians are there the next day. Preparing the transition "My son now lives in a better world because it is a victory, is something bigger: the possibility of change." We have spent two years talking with Egyptian friends transitions with the tiny mouth.

It's what helps us in Spain, our infinite capacity approach, never fully explored, to the realities in convulsion. Our recent history approaches. A difficult transition: social protest, demands for improvement of institutional change of regime, calming tanks, military junta annulled the constitution, etc..

Blunt arousal, high expectations at maximum power. Fundamental questions: How will move into the elite Egyptian democracy? How Islam will play in the new political context? Difficult to combine with popular demands for increased wages and social structural changes. Which we underprivileged youth, youth who have taken their opinions of cyber cash, the street already knew, that there was freedom in the world of the blogosphere, on Facebook.

That was the window open relationship with the world for all without condition. Millions of Egyptians use social networks whose use has skyrocketed in the last five years. Each mobilized, and many in their simple relationships, and vision with the world. All well-informed, little manipulated.

The most, have been progressively expressing thanks to the time that has accompanied these 18 days, the smell of jasmine Tunisian and strong names: anger, freedom, change ... For the first time. The company brings change, not a democracy imported. Pluralism in the demonstrations also growing individualism.

Favorable conditions, but also challenges: the organization, leadership, the representativeness of these modernizing elites and their ability to understand a country, the most populous Arab world, with illiteracy and massive poverty. Political Islam, but also that permeates society, trivialized, individualized (quoting Oliver Roy) demonstrations at the pace of Friday prayers.

A time Islam, social, whose role can play more in this period is organized plurality. Share what you felt about a great opportunity offered by these moments of psychic turmoil, global, almost universal. Egypt is an important country, as we have seen, complex and complicated, enormous in its demographic and ability, and today, above all, a great country thanks to its people, and today the ancient Egyptians future events.

Can we help people to what is happening? Visit Egypt, contribute to tourism, help your main resource will not collapse. Would not it be a sign of solidarity and support staff? There are demonstrations planned to ask the tourists to return. Who knows if today we are privileged to live in a world a little better than yesterday thanks to this, thanks to the people.

The challenges are daunting as the uncertainties, at the height of what has happened. The change was there, we do not perceive its importance to break civilizing rants and myopic eyes. And it's the little things, stories of people, get to write history in uppercase. Today a reminder for people, for Egypt in motion.
