A Ben Ali nephew sentenced to 15 years in prison

A court in the city of Beya, east of Tunisia, has been sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison a nephew of deposed President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. Sofian Ben Ali, tried by the court of the town in Tunisia, was yesterday found guilty of issuing bad checks worth 350,000 euros.


This statement is issued just one day after another Tunisian court sentenced in absentia to Ben Ali and his wife Leila Trabelsi to 35 years in prison for embezzling public funds. Also, former president and former first lady, refugees in Saudi Arabia after fleeing Tunisia on 14 January, were also sentenced to pay a total of 45 million euros.

In this process, the first of its kind in the history of the Arab world, Ben Ali is judged to be discovered in one of his palaces, after he fled, large sums of money and jewels of great value. Ben Ali will be judged also on 30 June for weapons possession and narcotics use and trafficking.
