Tokyo .- Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO), operator of the Fukushima nuclear power, made the first detailed measurements of radiation inside the plant, almost a month and a half after the devastating tsunami of 11 March, the agency reported Sunday Kyodo local. For this the company has developed a map showing the radiation at 150 points around Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the plant, TEPCO workers seeking to stabilize after the tsunami spoil your cooling system.
The map, designed to prevent workers in highly contaminated areas, is updated regularly and sent to the technicians at the Ministry of Industry and Nuclear Safety Agency. Measurements with data from the past Wednesday night, showing a fragment of debris near the reactor 3 which shows a radiation of 900 mSv per hour, according to Kyodo.
A worker exposed to this level of radioactivity reached in just 17 minutes up to 250 mSv established by the Government as the annual limit for workers working in Fukushima. Technicians believe that the contaminated part is the result of the explosion that occurred on March 13 by combustion of hydrogen in unit 3.
The fragment was removed by machinery operated by remote control and housed inside a special container with more debris. To prevent workers from being exposed to high radiation levels, the company uses this method to remove debris. Another piece from the reactor 3 registered 300 mSv, while the surface of a pipe used to transfer water contaminated from unit 2 to a special container recorded between 75 and 86 mSv, Kyodo detailed.
To date 30 technicians have been exposed to more than 100 mSv, the regular annual limit on nuclear emergencies, but in the case of Fukushima, the Government has raised to 250 at the seriousness of the situation. Meanwhile, efforts continue to cool the reactors 1, 2 and 3 of the plant and the fuel pool 4 on TEPCO injected yesterday that 140 tons of water that managed to lower the temperature in that container from 86 to 66 degrees Celsius .
The company has indicated that closely monitors the volume of water injected, and it is feared that the weight of the liquid can damage the building of the reactor 4, said today NHK.
