Hamas detains two suspects in the murder of Italian activist

Gaza. .- The Ministry of Interior of the Hamas government in Gaza announced today the arrest of two new suspected of involvement in the murder of Italian activist Vittorio Arrigoni, found dead early yesterday after being kidnapped the previous day by a group Salafi Jihadist. "Security forces arrested two suspects who are being interrogated and continue to pursue all members of the group that carried out the kidnapping and murder of Italian activist," said a statement released by the Ministry of Interior of Hamas.

Since the crime took place, the Hamas security forces have forced entry into homes of many followers of Salafi groups and arrested dozens of people, who are being interrogated in order to get any information that might lead them to find the murderers. Arrigoni arrived in the Gaza Strip in August 2008 on a boat chartered by international solidarity in support of the Palestinians to transport goods to Gaza to break the harsh blockade which Israel is subjected from June 2007.

Since then working on projects and support sensisibilización nonviolent resistance against Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, through the organization the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine. On the morning of Thursday, the 36 year old activist was kidnapped by unknown assailants as he walked to a restaurant.

Hours after a video appeared on the Internet showing him shackled, blindfolded and signs of violence in the face, and a group calling itself the "Brigade of the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad Knight" Hamas was within 30 hours Salafi release all imprisoned, threatened to kill the activist.

The video claimed that Italy "is the state of the infidels, whose army fighting in Muslim countries." Before expiry of the period, the Hamas forces found the body of Arrigoni in an empty apartment rented in northern Gaza. The murder has shocked the Palestinians and prompted the rejection and condemnation of all Palestinian factions and the international community.
