UKRAINE - Ukrainian Japanese worried about the events

Local authorities assert: a disaster like the one that struck the central Fukushima is impossible in Ukraine. The reason? When the construction of nuclear power plants began in Soviet Ukraine, all facilities were provided taking into account the risk of an earthquake to a magnitude of 6. This figure is generally regarded as the maximum expected earthquake in Ukraine.

Ever, it is said at the press service of the State Committee for regulating nuclear power, the national control of atomic energy, an earthquake of this magnitude has been recorded throughout the history. However, responding to events in Japan, the committee decided to conduct surprise inspections in plants across the country.

Ukraine currently has five plants. The most famous one at Chernobyl, in the Kiev region, has four reactors. She is definitely at a standstill since 2000. But fifteen other reactors are in operation elsewhere in the country, three in central Youjnooukraïnsk in the south, in Mykolaiv Oblast, two Khmelnitska in the center, four Kouznetsovsk in Rivne Oblast, in the west, and six in the central Energodar near Zaporizhzhya.

Twelve of these reactors are operated at the same time, three being maintenance. There is great concern, even if the authorities want reassuring. Energodar, most of Ukraine and Central Europe, was built taking into account all the risks of earthquake, storm and other weather. It should theoretically withstand anything.

Also according to the Audit Committee, "all important safety equipment meet the standards of seismic stability. During its construction, the central Energodar has been designed to withstand any earthquake with a magnitude of 6 degrees on the Richter scale, the maximum observed in the region where it is located.

But seismologists Ukrainians are not of that opinion. Zaporizhzhya is actually not a major seismic zone, but the country does not mean immune. The regions most at risk are respectively 300 and 900 kilometers from the central Energodar.
