Sixteen dead after falling from a high voltage cable on party crowd

At least 16 people were killed and 50 wounded today, dropping a high voltage cable of a crowd enjoying a celebration of Carnival in the Brazilian city of Bandeira do Sul, according to a police spokesman quoted by regional agencies. The tragedy happened on Sunday afternoon in the main square of Bandeira do Sul, a town of about 6,000 inhabitants in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais (southeast), which organized the last three different days in anticipation of the Carnival festivities.

Witnesses said the accident was caused by a "power trio", as they are known trucks equipped with a stage and sound amplification boxes carrying full orchestra and brighten the parades of the Carnival parades. The truck knocked down a power line installed in the main city square, which was completely dark after the accident.

The cable dropped to the ground to some of the people who were on the truck, electrocuted other and also hit some dancing in the street. According to other versions, the cable fell after being hit by an artifact of fireworks launched during the party and caused a short circuit. "Just let us know what really happened after firefighters carried out their investigation," said Mayor Bandeira do Sul, José Capituva, quoted by the website of the newspaper "Hoje em dia" of Minas Gerais.

The injured were taken to different hospitals Bandeira de Sul and the neighboring wells Caldas, Country and Botelho.
