Jerusalem. .- The Israeli Air Force bombed numerous targets early this morning in the Gaza Strip in response to an attack by Palestinian militants last night on the town of Beer Sheva, capital of the Negev Desert. Warplanes, helicopters and Israeli tanks shelled Palestinian militant positions in numerous locations, and at least three people were wounded, medical sources in Gaza.
The shelling caused severe damage in the village of Dir el Balah, and military facilities used by various militias and the Islamist movement Hamas, which rules the strip since 2007. The sources reported that the targets were attacked simultaneously, including some in neighborhoods Sayaíe Zeitun and Gaza City, a farming area west of Khan Yunis, and another to the east of Dir el Balah.
According to the Israeli army, most attacked positions belonging to the armed wing of Hamas, the Qassam Battalions Azedin, and started for a place to launch rockets in northern Gaza. The bombings followed a few hours before the shooting of two medium-range Grad rockets against the Israeli city, about 35 miles from the Strip and about 200,000.
It is the first time Palestinian militants attacked the city from Cast Lead in Gaza between December 2008 and January 2009, which killed some 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. Staff of the Israeli emergency services reported that by the time they found the remains of one of two Palestinian rockets that hit a private residence in the north of the city causing damage but no casualties.
"I was out of the house when I heard the siren and told to children at the shelter," said Shlomo Amar, homeowner. "And there was a loud explosion and the whole house shook," he said told the newspaper Haaretz. The Israeli military spokesman's office reported that the extensive bombing was intended to show "determination" of the army to protect Israeli citizens "those who seek to harm." Local media speculated that the attack on Beersheba was in turn the reaction of the militias in Gaza bombing yesterday morning in which one Palestinian was killed and ten others injured.
