In Russia the figure is associated with Gorbachev's anti-alcohol campaign, with empty shelves in shops and with the collapse of the USSR. In the West, however, is considered one of the key historical figures of the twentieth century, particularly in Berlin, is revered as a saint of freedom. So his 80 birthday, to be fulfilled, is celebrated in style and with the intention of paying a last great living tribute to his role in the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Germans will not finish and never thank serves as the ideal reference these days in other totalitarian systems are looking to make a transition to democracy from within and in harmony.

Several bystanders applauded Gorbachev this morning, they recognized the character to the entrance of the Hotel Adlon in Berlin, where he is staying. "Gorby, torero!", Dared to complimenting a group of Spanish tourists who had just a few hours had visited the Checkpoint Charlie crossing point of the Iron Curtain and now a museum that is stored in the memory of citizens who died trying to cross clandestinely.

Just steps from your hotel, next to the Brandenburg Gate, the Kennedy Museum opened this afternoon a photographic exhibition on his biography, entitled "Family Album", which brings together images that range from his early childhood in Privolnoye of the early 30's with his parents, a poor peasant Orthodox.

There are two people who are revealed as essential reference in Gorbachev's personal life, judging from this selection of photos taken from his personal collection of memories. One of them is Raisa, the woman who supported him in the political adventure that led to late-80s of the twentieth century the freedom of political expression and religion in the Soviet Union, who died in September 1999 cause of the leucocitoma and whose memory now devotes all his current humanitarian activity.

In 2006 was formed in London International Raisa Gorbachev Foundation, which funds projects aimed at combating child leucocitoma, helping to cover up to 150,000 euros it costs per person treated. This prize will be awarded in three nominations whose names correspond to the instructions of Gorbachev's reforms, "Glasnost" and "Perestroika." The second personality that seems to have this known atheist is that of Pope John Paul II, who visited for the first time in fall 1986 at the Vatican.

On that occasion spoke in Russian alone and for 60 minutes and then defined the Soviet spokesman's interview behind closed doors as a meeting of "a Marxist activist and a militant Catholic." At that followed many other conversations and photographs of his meetings play an important role in Gorbachev's personal albums.
