Skype, Gmail and Hotmail account for large-scale threats to Russian security, according to the FSB

Encryption of emails Gmail and Hotmail, as well as Voice over Internet system Skype, pose a threat "large scale" to Russia's security, as stated by the head of security communications center of the FSB (the former KGB). "In recent times the widespread use of encrypted communications network and cryptography, especially in foreign goods, raises a great concern to the FSB," said the official in the Russian intelligence, Alejandro Andreetchkine.

"These include Gmail, Hotmail and Skype," said Andreetchkine, according to Russian news agencies, at a meeting of a government committee on telecommunications. "The uncontrolled use of these services may involve a large-scale threat to Russian security," he added. The spokesman for Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, said the FSB's concerns are well founded, although the Kremlin has sharply rebuked the head of the secret service for these statements.

"There is a view expressed by the FSB, perfectly justified, which corresponds to the features of this service, and this position is fully argued," Peskov said. "However, there are other points of view (...) and everything will be studied thoroughly to then determine a final position and take appropriate action," added the spokesman.

For its part, a Kremlin official who asked to remain anonymous, directly criticized the head of the FSB and noted that Russian policy on infromación technologies and networks do not fall within its competence. "The fact that Gmail or Skype are a threat to national security is a personal opinion and not the state policy in the development of Internet," said the official said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, is fond of Internet and new technologies. In fact, he considers it a priority to develop this infrastructure in the country, which has accumulated a long delay in this regard resective other world powers. For his part, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, considered the strongman of the country, who was president between 2000 and 2008 - is a KGB excoronel also headed the FSB at the time of the presidency of Boris Yeltsin.
