Muslims and solidarity

Muslim Hands (Manos Muslim) and Islamic Relief (Islamic Relief) are coordinating with UNHCR, IOM and the Tunisian Red Crescent to help refugees.

"We will not duplicate the work they are doing. The food and water are not a problem, sanitation was during the first week, but now is solved," said Arslan Nusrat, project coordinator for Muslim Hands. "We deal more psychological support and asked the UNHCR to leave us some ground to make a football field and to start doing some activities that people are not sitting all day doing nothing.

For them it is better to be physical and mentally occupied, "he says. Sport can be a good way to relieve tension and to avoid confrontations between nationalities. "We fear that have security problems in the camp, because these people have suffered greatly," says Abdelmomen Daymi meanwhile, head of Islamic Relief field shifted.

90% of these refugees are Muslims and organizations on the ground have already been ordered to provide them with places where they can pray and practice their religion as a way to help at this difficult time. Many refugees arrive with anxiety and stress, having witnessed violence or have lived in the flesh.

Almost all who have crossed the border have been assaulted and robbed on the way and, at least, threatened. Muslim Hands is a Pakistani NGO, although based in the UK. Language proficiency are about refugees from that part of the world. "We are working to communicate and move to different ethnic minorities and refugees as Bangladeshis and Pakistanis.

We have been in talks with the Embassy for the repatriation of 250 Pakistanis who arrived on Tuesday and no one had noticed," he says. "We also work helping UNHCR to organize the camp of the Bangladeshis. As we have no language barrier can talk to them. The idea now is to press the Government of Bangladesh to repatriate these people," he adds.

Until yesterday there were 14,000 Bangladeshis in refugee camps in Tunisia. Today there are 10,000, after the repatriation of 4,000 of them. "We hope that in five or six days everyone has had to leave for their country," says Nusrat. Chouchen field, eight km away from Ras Ajdir be empty and waiting for a new wave of displaced persons.

Nusrat estimated to be between 15.00 and 20,000 people across the border in the Libyan side, waiting to cross. Some testimonies from refugees speak of the existence of a camp about 35 kilometers. The Libyan authorities are allowing these people, mostly workers who earned their living in Libya, to cross the border post by little, the rate of between 500 and 1,000 per day.

Islamic Relief Muslim Hands and also work with other nationalities. "The communities of Sudan have been being repatriated. The embassy of this country is very receptive and has evacuated its citizens. As for the people of Ethiopia, Nigeria, Somalia and Eritrea, some are illegal immigrants and do not want to return to their countries "he explains.

"That's another problem: they do not want to return to their country because the situation there is very difficult," he said in reference to countries in conflict or serious violence. "Muslim Hands is an international organization working in 60 countries. Our main focus is humanitarian emergencies, but we also have education programs, sponsorship of orphans and sanitation," Arslan said Nusrat.
