Republicans and Democrats reach agreement to avoid the 'close' the U.S. Government

Washington. (EFE) .- The U.S. president, Barack Obama said today that the agreement reached by leaders of Congress on the federal budget includes "the largest annual cuts in the history" of the country. "Congress, on behalf of all Americans, has now reached an agreement to avoid paralyzing the government," he said in a televised statement from the White House, which acknowledged that some of the cuts approved "will be painful and would not have been in better circumstances.

" Obama appeared minutes after the chairman of the House of Representatives, Republican John Boehner, announced an agreement to finance the activities of federal agencies until next Thursday at midnight, when both parties expect to have approved a budget for the remainder of fiscal year 2011.

According to legislative sources, the budget shall incorporate a relief package of 38,500 million dollars, a figure closer to the one promoted by Republicans to 33,000 million proposed by Democrats in the negotiations of recent weeks. "As in any worthwhile undertaking, both parties have had to make difficult sacrifices and give ground on issues that were important to them.

And I certainly did," said Obama, who has acted as "mediator" between the leaders of both chambers in several White House meetings this week. The agreement approved today authorized a further extension of the previous fiscal year's funding, to allow time for Congress to draft and vote next week, a measure that covers all six remaining months of this year.

That agreement, which came into force at midnight (0400 GMT Saturday), make instant cash a first cut 2,000 million, as confirmed by the Democratic majority leader in the Senate, Harry Reid. Obama admitted that these cuts will affect "programs that people trust" and "infrastructures that are necessary." "But to start living within our means is the only way to protect investments that will help America compete for new jobs, those that affect the education of our children, student loans, clean energy and medical research to save lives, "he said.

To reach an agreement, Republicans relented in its demand to cut all funding for Planned Parenthood, a women's health care provider that includes among its services are abortions under certain circumstances. Finally, they abandoned that claim in exchange for a commitment that the Senate will vote to decide if stripped of funds to the organization.

Also gave several proposals that would have eliminated funding for the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. "This was a debate on budget cuts, not social issues like women's health and protection of our water and air. These are important issues that deserve their own discussion, not just in a debate on funding," said Obama .

The president, speaking in front of a window through which one could see the Washington Monument in the capital, was pleased that symbol, "visited each year by hundreds of thousands of people around the world, go to remain "open" on Saturday. The White House had already begun preparations for a stay of the Administration for lack of funds, which would have affected more than 800,000 employees and had blocked access to hundreds of monuments and national parks in the country, among other problems.
