Raul Castro was elected first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba

Havana, April 19 .- The President of Cuba, Raul Castro, was elected first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC only), the highest office of the organization which replaced his brother Fidel, who ceded power in 2006 by illness and he held the position since the party's founding in 1965. In the presence of Fidel, Raul Castro received the applause of the whole of the Sixth Congress of the CPC made public today after it closed the designation by the Central Committee of the organization.

Raul Castro addressed the plenary to announce that it has been chosen as the second secretary of the party's first vice president of Cuba, Jose Ramon Machado Ventura. The first and secretary of the Cuban Communists announced the new politburo composed of fifteen members, four fewer than the previous twelve-of repeat and incorporate three new directors.

Members who remain in the politburo are Ramiro Valdes, Abelardo Colome, Ricardo Alarcón, Julio Casas Regueiro, Leopoldo Cinta Frías, Ramon Espinosa, Esteban Lazo, Miguel Diaz Canel, Alvaro Lopez and Salvador Valdés, Raúl Castro well and Machado. Joining the political bureau are Marino Murillo, Deputy Prime Minister, Adel Izquierdo (finance minister) and Mercedes Lopez (first secretary of the PCC in Havana).

The Cuban Communists closed down on Tuesday the Sixth Congress which approved the economic reform plan to update the socialist model has been formalized over from Fidel Castro, 84 years and handed over power in 2006, leading the party and its replacement by his brother Raul. The closing of the Sixth Congress is broadcast live on Cuban television.
