Israeli attacks in Gaza: 8 dead including two children among the victims

Tension rises in the Gaza Strip, where at least eight Palestinians were killed in two separate Israeli attacks. Shots fired by a tank against a house in a neighborhood east of Gaza have claimed five victims, including two children. "At least five martyrs were killed by shots fired at some young men playing football in the neighborhood of Shajaiya," near the border with Israel, said Selmiya Adham Abou, head of emergency services in territory controlled by Hamas.


At least ten other people were injured. The Israeli army confirmed it had opened fire, making it clear that it used no artillery, but mortar shells, after launching four homemade Qassam rockets into Israel.

Already last night, Israel carried out a series of raids in the Gaza Strip in response to rocket fire from the Palestinians. At least seventeen people were injured. Abu Mazen - Meanwhile, the president of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Abu Mazen, has returned to ask the leaders of Hamas to support his initiative for dialogue and inter-requested leave to enter the Gaza Strip.

Abu Mazen has made these statements on the sidelines of a meeting with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev in Moscow, as reported by the Interfax news agency.
