Germany Guttenberg has resigned

German Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, a rising star of the CDU has resigned after the so-called copygate. The news had been anticipated in the on-line Bild. The newspaper states that the minister has already handed his resignation to Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The story came from the sweep that the defense minister had copied much of his doctoral thesis. On the issue was addressed again the president of the Bundestag, the conservative Norbert Lammert (CDU), which in recent days had already been critical of Guttenberg: the case, said Monday the newspaper Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, is a "nail in the coffin confidence in our democracy.

" Strong words, which followed publication of an open letter to Merkel and signed by some 23 000 academics, students and ordinary citizens: in the letter criticizing the management of the Chancellor, which is a "parody" of the PhD. If up until last week had been besieged Guttenberg only by political opposition, so now the pressure starts to rise even within the ruling coalition.

"It's the most painful decision of my life," said German Defence Minister, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, a brief statement to the press after his resignation from office. "Do not you leave a job that is easily done with the heart," added the 39 year old Guttenberg at the site of his former ministry and added that it has resigned over the affair itself, but because the weight of the scandal now falls on all the military.
