FRANCE - Chirac, a litigant like no other

Of course, this does not go after an old man, moreover is a former head of state physically very weak. Who speaks to shoot an ambulance? A trial does not accommodations. They had also been taken into account when you open it because the defendant had been excused illustrates technical hearings. Even in six months, Jacques Chirac should definitely be tried.

His lawyer Georges Kiejman a beautiful game into perspective. The issue of ghost workers from the city of Paris is not a criminal matter. It even wants to admit to him that in view of history, "these cases will weigh less heavily than the lives saved by the refusal of the war in Iraq." Even fifteen or twenty years after the fact, can we ignore an issue that concerns the design of power? If Jacques Chirac had "pulled strings" of friends, he would obviously neither the first nor the last to have done.

But this is of course not only that. It is the existence of a real system built in defiance of the laws to seize power is about. In this sense, the case of fictitious jobs can not be scanned. Jacques Chirac, who left the Elysee Palace four years ago, has again become an ordinary litigant.

Who should be tried as an ordinary man. If that man, praised the late "for his sense of values" actually meant to serve democracy, he can not escape. The French are not stupid, that make the difference between compassion and inspired by the human sense of justice that must prevail. While Jacques Chirac is their favorite politician, they are 56% think he should be judged.

The temptation to overlook could be very serious consequences. There are already Marine Le Pen, who according to a new poll beat all candidates in the first round of presidential elections (including Dominique Strauss-Kahn), make fun of merciless justice with the weak against the powerful and complacent.
