Sarkozy calls for strengthening UN mission in Ivory Coast

Brussels. .- French President Nicolas Sarkozy, announced today that his country will propose a new resolution to strengthen the capacity of the United Nations mission in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and stop the violence in the country. In a press conference in Brussels, Sarkozy said he was "very concerned" about developments in the conflict between supporters of the current Ivorian leader, Laurent Gbagbo, Alassane Ouattara and recognized by the international community as president.

"Gbagbo's forces with heavy weapons fire on the civilian population (...). It is a scandal," said the French president. Announced his country will propose a United Nations resolution allowing UNOCI stop, at least, the use of such weapons in Ivory Coast. The idea is in line with the points made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), yesterday called for a strengthening of the international mission to provide security to the population.

Transferring power to the countries of the region pledged to take steps to transfer the power he wields to Alassane Ouattara Gbagbo, known as the winner of the second round of presidential elections on 28 November. According to UNOCI, a total of 52 people were killed last week in Ivory Coast because of political conflict.

In total, since the middle of last December, when the fighting began between supporters of both candidates for the Presidency, the United Nations Mission estimated to have killed 462 people.
