Earthquake in the Golden Triangle in Burma and Thailand, 76 dead

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale with epicenter at 10 km depth occurred at 20.25 on Thursday (the 14.55 in Italy ) in Myanmar, not far from the borders with Thailand and Laos, the famous Golden Triangle of opium farmers.

The area is sparsely populated: the most populated town is Mae Sai, 28 thousand inhabitants. Near the epicenter live no more than 2 000 people have arrived where seismic waves were Grade IX of the modified Mercalli scale. The earthquake occurred far from the oceans and therefore there is no danger of tsunami.


The victims are at least 76, 74 in Myanmar as a woman hit by the collapse of a wall and a child of 4 years in Thailand, an area north of Chiang Rai, four kilometers from the border. In the former Burma, 111 wounded, 390 houses were damaged, 14 Buddhist monasteries and nine public buildings.

The greatest damage is recorded in the village of Mong Lin, 8 km from Tachileik, where there are 29 dead and sixteen injured. Eleven more dead and 29 injured in road Tarlay damaged in Tachilek, Myanmar near the border to Bangkok
