Lagos. .- Several people were injured in an explosion at a polling station in the Nigerian town of Maiduguri (north), while legislative elections are held in the most populous country in Africa. Police sources said the injured were security agents and officials of the polling place. The voting process for elections in Nigeria began today at 12.30 local time (11.30 GMT) after yesterday's violent episodes they occur in the days before.
The process of accreditation of voters began satisfactorily at 08.00 local time (07.00 GMT), but it was not until four hours later that Nigerians have begun to enter the ballot at the polls. Necessary election materials are present in all the constituencies where voting was held today, whose absence led to the postponement last Saturday, in the middle of the process.
However, attendance at the time of the opening of polls, is lower than last Saturday. Voting will last until every registered voter has cast his ballot and, although there is no set closing time, sources estimate that the organization will take place at around 18.00 local time (17.00 GMT).
Security forces continue monitoring the process, after at least three incidents on the eve of the election. In the northern state of Borno, gunmen killed four election officials last night while distributing the material. In Kaduna State in northern Nigeria, the security forces yesterday killed a suspected terrorist and wounded another.
Yesterday, in Suleja, in the northern state of Niger, 13 people died, most members of the National Youth Service, and fifty were wounded in the explosion of a device in an office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC .) This event has caused the suspension of elections in Suleja, but not the only constituency that votes will be postponed.
The CENI said Thursday that the Senate vote to be held this Saturday at 15 of the 109 constituencies, while voting for the Lower House will be postponed in 48 of the 360 constituencies for the persistence of some complications that forced their adjournment on day 2. The proposed date for votes in these districts is 26 April, when state elections take place, while the presidential election will be held on the 16th.
