Japan, now WHO is warning food "seriously contaminated"

Fukushima, smoke from the reactors after the earthquake, the tsunamis and the nuclear nightmare, Japan is now warning food. The World Health Organisation, in fact, called 'serious' radioactive contamination of food in the country hit by the quake.

Radioactivity was detected also in the running of Tokyo. The Japanese government, while repeating several times that the quantities found are far from being a danger to health, have blocked the distribution of milk and two types of vegetables produced in four prefectures surrounding the plant, as a "precautionary measure" .

Fukushima, meanwhile, has tested a new emergency situation: a dense column of smoke is escaping from the reactor 3, where in the morning had been an increase in pressure, and this pushed the TEPCO to evacuate all staff (580 people were at work among workers, technicians and experts).

Once solved the problem to the reactor 3, a white smoke began to emerge from the reactor 2. In this case, the smoke would have been non steam generated from the fuel tank. The nuclear safety agency, quoted by Kyodo said that there would be no change 'significantly' in the level of radiation following the escape of smoke.

The Japanese authorities are planning now to take measurements to control the levels of radioactivity in the sea near the nuclear power plant in Fukushima 1. "It is possible that radioactive substances even in small quantities may have spread into the sea," said an agency responsible for nuclear safety.
"In any event, even were the case, given the low level of radioactivity in the air, it would not have health consequences," he added. Abnormal levels of radioactivity due to the presence of iodine 131 and cesium 137 have already been detected in some foods (milk, spinach, beans) and in tap water in Tokyo and other cities.
