Sarkozy has finally rid of his foreign minister, Michele Alliot-Marie. But this comes too late eviction. The MAM ball turned into bomb repeatedly, each day bringing its share of ministerial denials immediately contradicted by the facts. The damages are considerable, not only outside of France where the diplomacy of the Elysee has lost much of its credibility, but also inside.
In preparation for the 2012 presidential election, Nicolas Sarkozy wanted to use the French presidency of the G20 to perfect the look of a great chief of state and thus part to Dominique Strauss-Kahn, its eventual rival. It missed. Any competence - real - the new Foreign Minister, Alain Juppe, is not sufficient to restore the charred diplomacy.
As for the project, mentioned [27 February] at the President's televised speech, to revive the defunct Union for the Mediterranean, it seems unlikely. In keeping with the American policy without any benefits, Sarkozy caused the only major rupture of his five-year, with that of Gaullist diplomacy autonomous and well established in the Middle East.
The president must return to land where the national waiting persistent unemployment and widespread discontent. In addition, he's forced to make emergency in a ministerial reshuffle, three months after having done the same. Its agenda is thereby disrupted. The president wanted to organize one after the cantonal elections of March 20th and 27th to get some centrists.
Not a chance. It hardly afraid governmental reshuffle the cards in a month. By launching a debate on Islam in France, Nicolas Sarkozy hopes to regain a part of the Le Pen electorate. But he remains stuck in the spiral of failure. This risk rather attempt to strengthen the position of Marine Le Pen.
